The Damned is a long story or Novella by Algernon Blackwood published in 1914.
Bill and Frances are siblings who live in a small flat. Frances' friend Mabel was married to Samuel Franklyn, a sucessful banker and a religious zealot. After the death of Smauel Franklyn,Mabel invites Bill and Frances to the Towers to spend the summer with her.
Frances goes to the towers and after some day Bill also moves there.
When Bill comes to the towers he finds that he's not comfortable there.

'I had been but a short hour in the house-big,comfortable,luxurious house but had experienced this sense of being unsettled,unfixed,fluctuating-a kind of impermanence that transient lodgers in hotels must feel, but that the guest in a friend's home ought not to feel,be the visit short or long.'

Thus the siblings find out that the house is haunted.

Although the atmosphere in the book is horrific  we don't get to see any physical presence of actual horrific entity. The  occupants of the house feel there is something amiss but they are not able to pin point it as nothing ever happens.
'Nothing happened anywhere; house, garden, mind alike were barren, abortive, torn by the strife of frustate impulse, ugly, hateful, sinful.'
'All was so vague and terrible as we stood there playing the great game of this sinister house where nothing ever happened.'

I would not say the book was great but it was different from the usual horror novels that i read
A decent read.
