The wench is dead is the third novel in the Inspector Morse series by Colin Dexter. It's the third novel featuring Morse that i'm reading. It's 1989 and Chief Inspector Morse is nearly 50 years old and not in best shape.  Morse was not feeling well from the start of the week and by the end of the week his condition gets so bad that he has to be hospitalized. He gets admitted to John Radcliffe hospital where he starts getting treatment for perforated ulcer. Although, he get a little bit of reprieve from his grueling schedule but after sometime he starts getting bored. During this time of boredom he gets a booklet that described  a murder of a woman on the Oxford Canal. The woman, Joanna Franks was murdered  130 years ago  and the culprits the crew of the boat in which she was travelling was punished. After, reading the booklet something doesn't seems right to Morse and he starts investigating the case. What was the mystery behind the woman's murder? Will Morse be able to solve this mystery that happened so long ago? Well, read on to find out.

I liked the book. I will not say it was outstanding but it was readable. There is not much thrill in the novel as the incident had happened a long time ago and so there were no confrontation between the suspects and Morse. This confrontation is what makes reading detective novels fun but since this point is missing here. Morse takes this case so as to pass his time but in time he gets engrossed in it and so is the reader. There is no sense of urgency in the book although the reader gets to see the aspect of Morse that has made him such a good detective.

There were few aspects of the book that i found amusing. It was fun and baffling to see how many women were falling for Morse. Another thing i found hard to believe was that how they could find evidence in a house that was more than 150 years old.

So at the end i would just say that if you like Inspector Morse books than you can give it a shot. But if you'll miss it you'll not miss much.
