First Sentence:
I was in the locker-room of the country-club, getting dressed after the best afternoon of golf I had ever had.

Warren Thompson and James Felderson are best friends and law partners. Apart from this James is also married to Helen, sister of Warren. When James finds out that his wife is carrying out an affair with Frank Woods, a local playboy, and has decided to run away with him. He's devastated. On his way to meet Frank Woods, James and Helen have an accident in which James dies. In the coroner's inquest it's found that James had been killed by a bullet.
The murder's blame falls on Helen who was riding behind her.

Warren knows that his sister hasn't killed James but now he has to prove that to the jury.
There are only two suspects in his eyes viz Frank woods ,the playboy, and Zalnitch whom James had helped convict and who when pardoned had threatened the people who had helped him put in Jail.

Now it' s on Warren's shoulders to find the real murderer so that he can save his sister and get justice for his friend.

It was a fast and entertaining read. I felt somewhere that the plot seemed a little far fetched but one has to keep in mind it was written in 1920's. So sometimes the plot and story line may look ridiculous from today's point of view but if one can leave it aside, you'll enjoy it more.
