The English Teacher is  the third novel by R K Narayan in a series of auto-biographical novels preceded by Swami and Friends and The Bachelor of Arts . It was published in 1945.
Plot :
Krishna is a teacher of English  Literature at the Albert Mission College. His lives in hostel . His days are passed in classes and long nightly discussions with his colleagues. but all this changes when his wife  Susila and new born daughter,Leela, come to live  with him. He leaves the hostel and rents a house and his married life begins in true sense. The book portrays the struggle of Krishna as he tires to fulfill his duties as a loving husband and a doting father. The bliss of a domestic life makes him realize, that there is more to life than teaching.
In my opinion this is the most beautiful work of Narayanji that i have read. Its one of my favorite books. The book very beautifully depicts the joys of married life with its moments of happiness and little tiffs that are sure to occur in any marriage.
The second part of the books deals with the untimely demise of Krishna's wife and how he copes with it. Its an autobiographical novel which was written by him after the his wife passed away due to typhoid. So i think Narayanji gave his character Krishnan which he was longing for himself, a chance to feel the presence and communicate with his wife and thus be near to her always.
